#BlockTheIPO Protests in New York, San Francisco and Chicago Demand Anthropic Stop Its Rush to Go Public
(New York, NY and San Francisco, CA and Chicago, IL)—On Wednesday, October 14, organizers and community members with Stop Funding Billionaires will rally outside Anthropic’s offices in New York City at 12 PM ET and San Francisco at 9 AM PT. In Chicago, Stop Funding Billionaires will join protestors with The People’s Lobby at the Sheraton Grand Hotel where JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who is underwriting the IPO, is set to speak to the Economic Club of Chicago. They will demand that Anthropic halt its IPO as investors gather for the company’s Pre-IPO Investor Day in San Francisco.
Further inflating the AI bubble, Anthropic, with the support of underwriting banks like JPMorgan Chase, is trying to go public at a sky-high valuation despite unprofitable financials and dangerously faulty technology. The capital supplied by the IPO will fund the expansion of environmentally destructive and socially harmful technology. If the AI billionaires’ vision becomes reality, organizers warn, working people face mass job displacement and economic dislocation on a historic scale. As Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has publicly voiced, AI poses risks to humanity, yet the company is moving full speed toward a public offering.
The IPO would accelerate Anthropic’s push to expand its dangerously unreliable technology into places it shouldn’t be: like classrooms, doctor’s offices, and military contexts – right after the Pentagon’s AI hallucinated a false nuclear threat, almost causing war between the US and China. Meanwhile, data center emissions are accelerating the climate emergency, even as insurance executives have warned climate collapse is destroying the conditions underlying the global financial system. Given the unprofitable and highly leveraged financials of the AI bubble and Anthropic, the economic risks are immense.
To prevent these catastrophic social, environmental and economic harms, the IPO must be blocked: otherwise when the AI bubble bursts, billionaires and Wall Street investors will make off like robber barons with ill-gotten record profits, while worker’s pension funds, retail investors, and the public will be left holding the bag.
